What’s Next at Howard?: HUSA Constitutional Convention Recap
CAMPUS | SEP. 25, 2023
On Sept. 20, the 12th General Assembly of the Howard University Student Association (HUSA) Senate met for the Fall 2023 Constitutional Convention. At Howard, the Constitutional Convention is conducted to review the HUSA constitution and make any changes necessary for the new school year.
Held in Douglass Hall, the meeting was centered around the HUSA Judiciary, the Senate, and the Committees. The legislation and referenda that were debated and passed will be placed on the ballot during the upcoming fall elections.
We’ve compiled key takeaways from the convention just for you.
Searching for a Secretary
The HUSA Judiciary, the judicial branch which is responsible for interpreting the constitution, is currently holding elections for a secretary.
Trey James, a member of the HUSA Judiciary, says they have “formed initiatives to make the Judiciary more known on campus,” through “communication with other branches, social media, and mentoring.” A majority vote by senators allowed the merger between the policy board and HUSA Judiciary.
New Appointments Committee
The appointments committee was placed in the constitution. They will review and vote on the appointment and confirmation of those involved with HUSA.
HUSA Interns Appointments Coming Soon
For those who applied for a HUSA internship, stay tuned! Parliamentarian Joshua John-Lewis says the interview process has been difficult and “very competitive this year,” but the intern appointments for HUSA will be announced at the next meeting.
For those who missed the event, the meeting minutes and referenda will be posted on HUSA’s linktree on Sept. 25.
