Whether you're a fan of football or not, the Washington, D.C., Commanders have been impossible to ignore this NFL season. From name and location changes to setting franchise records, the team has made history in the 2024-2025 season, and is on track to reach the Superbowl since 1991.

This success has not come without its challenges. The program has faced major events and changes over the last two centuries that have all culminated to this moment..On Dec. 16, 1996, the Washington Commanders, then known as the “Redskins”, played their last gam in Metro DC at theRobert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. They were moved to Landover, Maryland, and now play at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium as FedEx Field. On Feb. 2, 2022, the Redskins officially changed their name and logo to the Washington Commanders. On April 25, 2024, former Heisman Trophy winner and current quarterback Jayden Daniels was drafted No. 2 overall in the first round by the Washington Commanders. Jan. 6, 2025, former president Joe Biden signed a deal that gave the city control of RFK stadium. The D.C. stadium was under federal control. Now, the Commanders are a step closer to having a homefield in the heart of D.C. And most recently, on Jan. 18, 2025, the Commanders defeated the Detroit Lions, punching their first conference championship appearance since 1992.

Washington, D.C., has not seen an NFL team like this in over a century. The rise in success can be credited to exceptional players, who have turned the program on its head. Jayden Daniels surpassed the record for offensive yards by a rookie. Terry McLaurin has recorded the most touchdowns in franchise history. The Commanders have had their first 7-2 start since 1996. The team has won 12 games for the first time since 1991. This change is the win for the program, yes, but also for the entire city. This season, the team has done more than just set records; the Commanders have given the city of D.C. hope.

This Sunday, Jan. 26, the Commanders will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship . The NFL comprises two major conferences: the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The winner of Sunday's game will be crowned the NFC champion and punch their ticket to the Super Bowl. In the past 20 years, the Commanders have made five playoff appearances with only one win. The 2024 season marks the most wins in a playoff season in over two decades.

To answer the question posed in the title, we simply don't know. The Commanders have one win and one loss to the Eagles this season. According to ESPN, the Eagles have a 63.7% chance to beat the Commanders.

Jayden Daniels and the Commanders have defied many odds this season. Despite the result Sunday, many D.C. natives and Commanders fans are truly proud of their team.

Tune in this Sunday on Fox at 3 p.m. EST.
