Vance, Waltz Stalemate in VP Debate

Vance, Waltz shake hands prior to the Vice Presidential debate.
– On Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, CBS News broadcasted the Vice Presidential debate between Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz live from New York. The debate began at 9 PM and was moderated by Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan, circumferencing all of America’s typical hot topics and the political backgrounds of both candidates. The Howard University Student Association hosted a watch party on campus in the Blackburn Forum.
Atlanta, Georgia, native Amari Battle attended the gathering but remained skeptical about how much influence the national exchange would have.
“I think that most people's minds are already made up, and what this debate did was probably confirms people's choices,” said Battle
Unlike both previous Presidential debates, where most reports agreed on a winner, the victor of the first and likely the only VP debate wasn't so obvious.
“I don’t know if there was a clear winner., I feel at times both were able to get their point across and were able to reply to claims, and at some points they were contradicting themselves,” said Battle.
Kerleen Reyes, a New York native, claims there wasn’t much difference between the northern politicians.
“I feel like it was a tie to be completely honest; there were moments where Walz and Vance agreed with each other and piggybacked off of each other, very different from the Presidential debate where Trump and Harris attacked each other. Also, there were moments where both candidates slipped, like when Waltz was pressed on his controversy of Hong Kong, and my favorite part of the debate occurred when Vance got muted,” stated Reyes
Even though Reyes doesn't see much contrast, she feels that last night was positive for the country.
“I think seeing the running mates of the next presidents helps to demonstrate the examples of the president; also, some people aren't that worried about the VPs, so it could change it.”
