AHHH, the smell of barbecue in the air, a sea of people and tents as far as you can see, music blasting, and eye-catching fashion–this year’s tailgate certainly did not disappoint.
Hundreds of Howard University students, alumni, families, and visitors gathered in the Howard Center Parking Lot on Georgia Ave for the annual Homecoming tailgate as the Bison took on the Norfolk State Spartans down the street at Greene Stadium. Whether sporting HU gear, a super fly fit, or Greek letters, everyone came out for food, drinks, music, and fun.
The theme of “Revival” seemed apparent as the entire event felt like one big family reunion cookout. The annual tailgate is arguably the highlight of Howard Homecoming week and it encapsulates the University’s overall community and culture.
Toki, a local visitor, attended the event for the second year in a row and she still can’t get enough of the HU atmosphere.
“I’ve been seeing it all over TikTok, all over social media, and I wanted to join. I want to see what it’s about,” Toki expressed as she danced to the Bounce music blasting in the nearby speakers.
Unlike other tailgates, this HU-style affair focuses less on the football game itself and more on the fun. Most people aren’t checking the score at all. You’ll find attendees dancing, talking, grilling, or simply hanging out near a tent.
While some are tailgate veterans, others like Emilie Wilkenson experienced this parking lot party for the first time.
“Honestly, this is my first one. But if I knew that it was like this every year I would’ve came out more often,” the senior Afro-American Studies major shared.
Some of the highlights of the afternoon included line dancing, clearing the path for Greeks to stroll, catching up with friends you haven’t seen in a while, meeting new people, and complimenting other students on their carefully crafted outfits– after hundreds of people bum-rushed the gate eager to get in of course.
A tradition that dates back to the early 2000’s and is only hosted during one football game of the year, this football-themed function truly helps to create memories that will last a lifetime.
