October is here and exams are well underway. As the fall semester rushes forward and midterms gain momentum, there's a noticeable whirlwind of activity from both professors and students. Both groups find themselves navigating a sea of stress as they strive to stay on course during this pivotal midpoint of the semester.
Undoubtedly, midterms come with their fair share of stress, but it's essential to persevere and make it to the finish line. However you choose to tackle your workload as the semester seems to fly by, it's vital to take things one day at a time.
Jordan Cole, a freshman at Howard University who is proudly enrolled in the School of Business, emphasizes the importance of “constantly checking each course's syllabus” and “keeping handy sticky notes on her desk to serve as a constant reminder of upcoming assignments”, a strategy that has helped her navigate the workload effectively.
Professors are also finding ways to manage midterm stress.
Professor Dorine Bethea, a highly regarded educator within Howard University's Cathy Hughes School of Communications revealed her unwavering motivation. Her primary goal is to “nurture an understanding and appreciation of a free press and its pivotal role in a democratic society”.
“Over the course of 15 weeks, I strive to instill enthusiasm for language, encourage exploration and discovery, and underscore the power of sharing our life experiences to enlighten others,” said Bethea.
Bethea’s motivation to keep her classes afloat is found in her eagerness to learn from her students and form an understanding of their thoughts and perspectives. Regardless of any stress that may be associated with her role as a professor, she welcomes it all for the betterment of students.
Kaily Kuykendall, a junior political science major, described her experience with midterms as blindsiding.
“The year has raced by, and midterms seemed to arrive sooner than anticipated," Kuykendall expressed. Nevertheless, she remains highly motivated to persevere and finish strong.
All in all, the semester has zoomed by, and we find ourselves at its halfway point. Midterms can be undeniably challenging, and for some, the stakes are rising. It's crucial to pause for self-reflection during this demanding season. Remember, Bison, in the face of adversity, we persevere – we've got this.
