Howard University hosted its annual Yardfest concert on Oct. 20 kicking off the highly-anticipated homecoming weekend. Despite fluctuating weather conditions, thousands gathered to indulge in music, food, and a variety of vendors. Offset, Victoria Monet, and Kaliii were just a few of the stars to take the stage.
The show opened up with acts from students and alumni artists such as Jordan Curls.
“Performing at Yardfest was seriously a dream turned reality. I never thought I’d have the courage to step out there when I attended my first Yardfest in 2018, but Howard really allowed me to step out of my shell and into my bag. I was surprised by the amazing energy everyone gave me on that stage, I really look forward to returning,” shared Curls.
Kaliii performed alongside the Howard University Bisonette Dance Ensemble. Her upbeat, catchy sound was followed by nostalgic hip-hop from Pusha T, who brought the Bisons back to the bops of the 2010s.
Victoria Monét graced the stage with stylish choreography and a performance of her hit song, “On My Mama.” The emerging star’s set was cut short by the rain.
“While her performance was good, it was really only one song so I was kinda disappointed in a way,” Zhané Gomez-Bravo, a senior from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Rapper Offset, a third of Atlanta’s Migos, also came through to show Howard some love, running off the stage to party closer to the crowd.
The concert concluded with an appearance from Sean “Diddy” Combs who came bearing gifts. At the end of a quick performance, Combs presented Howard University President, Ben Vinson III, with a $1 million donation to the university.
Celebrity alumni such as Lady London and Lance Gross were spotted in the crowd. Actress Paige Hurd, commonly known for her role as Lauren Baldwin in the STARZ TV series “Power,” was also in attendance.
“It’s my first time being at a homecoming let alone a college. I did not get to go since I was working my whole life so I’m really happy to be here,” shared Hurd as she made an appearance on the Yardfest stage.
Though weather complications and set issues occurred, the Yardfest concert remains an event that Howard students, alumni, and supporters admire.
