Howard University has officially been selected as the venue where presidential candidate Kamala Harris will spend election day.
Once again, Howard University students have found themselves at the center stage of American politics as election day approaches. The University has begun setting up major security in preparation for Harris and her team to spend election night at the Mecca, however, students remain uncertain about their ability to actually access the “watch party” the Harris campaign is putting on.
While forklifts and bleachers appear on The Yard, Howard students find themselves caught between celebrating their alumna’s success and feeling like outsiders on their own campus – watching history unfold just beyond their reach.
Vice President Harris has often expressed her love and appreciation for her alma mater, saying "I stand here today as the first vice president of the United States to have graduated from a Historically Black College or University... I say that to say anyone can do it. But I will add: It takes commitment. And as you know, Howard instills in all of us commitment to serve."
Harris recently canceled her planned visit to Howard University’s homecoming celebration, which had generated significant anticipation among students and alumni. The decision was made due to scheduling conflicts, though it sparked discussions about the importance of leadership engagement in HBCUs. Many expressed disappointment but also acknowledged the challenges of a busy political calendar.
As election day approaches, Howard University and its student population remain at the center of American politics, with students grappling with the complexities of their unique position. While many celebrate the recognition of their alma mater's notable achievements, concerns about accessibility and inclusivity during the campaign events persist.
Ultimately, the excitement surrounding this historic moment underscores the importance of active engagement between political leaders and HBCU communities, as they navigate the intricate balance of celebration and participation in shaping the future.
