Freshman Year Fears: Don’t Stress!
FRESHMAN XXL | OCT 1, 2024
So you’ve finally made it to the Mecca, home of some of the greatest Black authors, actors, athletes and trailblazers of our time. Here at Howard you get to be in the hub of Black culture, sitting side by side with the future leaders and soon to be presidents of our nation.
Congratulations! It’s exciting, right? Not at all nerve wracking or stressful for a baby bison. Sike. It is completely normal to feel intimidated, fearful, or anxious as a new freshman. I was once in your shoes, and although starting college can be daunting, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here is your official guide on how to conquer those freshman fears and fully enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Drip or DIE?
If you’re active on TikTok or Instagram, you’re probably aware of the renowned fashion culture at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), especially at Howard University. You might have seen comments about students showcasing their outfits on the Yard or statements suggesting that your everyday “groutfit” wouldn’t survive on these HU streets. Let me assure you that the hype is just that—hype. Many students at Howard enjoy dressing up, particularly during the first week of classes, but it’s not a requirement. Plenty of Bison don’t mind wearing sweatpants and old hoodies while out and about. The elaborate outfits you see during the initial weeks of the fall semester are generally exclusive to that period. As the weather changes, you’ll see more relaxed clothing like crocs and coats on the go. At the end of the day, no one is judging you for what you wear; trust me. This is not high school anymore.
Do I Belong Here?
If you’ve received an acceptance letter and are now on campus, you’ve earned the right to call yourself a Bison. Imposter syndrome is common at a school where you might be in class with a celebrity’s son or a politician’s daughter. Some students may be celebrities themselves, but don’t let the influencers intimidate you. Most of your fellow Bison are genuine individuals who don’t let social status affect their interactions. To dispel any doubts, remember that everyone shares the same struggles and either way, we all eat at the same table now.
Where Are the Homies?
A common question for new students is not just how to make friends, but where to find them. Often, the best friends you’ll make at Howard will come from unexpected interactions. A good starting point is your classes. If you find someone you click with, strike up a conversation as you walk out. You can ask for homework help or suggest grabbing lunch in the dining hall, which is another excellent place to meet people. Most students at Howard are kind and looking to make new friends. Jaida Williams, an incoming freshman, shares her experience:
“I feel like you just gotta say hi first. Everyone here is kinda lost, and it’s okay to be lost too. We’re all in the same boat.”
Don’t be afraid to ask if you can join someone’s seat at Annex or Blackburn; the answer is almost always yes.
How do I get involved? Ready…Set…EXPLORE!
Another great way to meet people is through clubs and organizations. Howard has numerous groups dedicated to various interests and hobbies. Whether related to your major, like the finance club, or your personal interests, like In the Loop, a crocheting group, there are many options. If you missed the org fair in August, check out the UGSA Instagram for upcoming events and interest meetings. They are always hosting exciting events where you can find a new bestie. There are also mentorship and service organizations, such as Ladies of the Quad Social Club or B.E.S.T You Programming, that are welcoming to freshmen.
Arynnel Alvarezvaldez, a second-year student and member of the class of 2023 in Jewels Incorporated, describes her experience as integral to feeling at home at Howard University. She notes,
“Joining Jewels Incorporated helped me gain confidence and newfound relationships that I will always hold close to my heart.”
Alvarezvaldez considers becoming a Jewel a highlight of her freshman year and adds,
“My sisters are the people who I would go to with anything at any time. They make me feel heard, loved, and respected.”
Joining such organizations not only enhances one's resume but also fosters lasting connections.
How Do I Get Around Again?
Washington, D.C. is a small city with effective public transportation, but safety is important. To explore your new surroundings, you can use the Shaw-Howard University metro station for a quick trip to Chinatown. The fare is minimal. For a more economical option, all buses are free, but travel with others and avoid late-night trips alone. The nearest bus stops on campus are on Georgia Avenue, just past Douglass Hall. Utilize Google Maps or Apple Maps to help with navigation. With a few rides on the 70 bus, you’ll become a pro at getting around.
Final Thoughts
There are many challenges that new Bison face when starting at Howard, but rest assured that you will be just fine. You might make mistakes and even shed some tears before the semester ends, but don’t let these obstacles get you down. College is your first step into adulthood, and while there may be hurdles, they do not have to define your experience. Keep trying, stay positive, and always be yourself! No matter what, you will find your way to exactly where you need to be.
