Saturday Evening’s frigid temperatures did not deter students from lining the sidewalk outside of Cramton Auditorium in anticipation of Howard University ELITE Models’ Class X showcase.

The show’s theme, ‘EXTREMA’, embodies the epic highs and lows that come with overindulgence in vices like sex (Erotica), money (Excessus), and drugs (Ecstasy). These three sections were personified in each article of clothing that graced the stage, showcasing the incredible intentionality of the creatives behind the show.

The first section, Erotica, opened with model Kendall Buycks wearing an intricate and lacey black bodysuit accompanied by a floor-length feathered robe and shimmering flower detailing at the neckline. Buycks was followed by several looks featuring motifs of tulle, silk, garters, corsets, and sensual extravagance. A showstopping performance by Maëva Innocent closed out this section, and the crowd erupted into raucous applause as she took her first steps on stage. She engaged in unbroken eye contact with the audience as she debuted in a flawless blonde blowout and lavish blue backless gown.

Excessus is logomania personified– featuring the silhouettes typical of the early 2000s era and a barrage of logos from notoriously prestigious brands. The first look: a skillfully executed caution tape mini-dress with “ELITE” embossed all over its yellow material. Model, Alexandria Fuller, strutted down the runway rocking a ponytail braided into literal dollar signs. The remainder of the section was filled with dollar bills and money in excess, at one point even an authentic Hermés Birkin Bag graced the stage.

Finally, the third section, Ecstasy rendered the audience speechless as it unfolded. Notably more conceptual than the previous sections, ‘Ecstasy’ drew inspiration from the works of high fashion brands and designers. Where previous looks were met with shrieks of excitement, the audience let out synchronous “oohs” and awe-filled gasps at the sight of these outfits. In stark juxtaposition to the first all-black look in the show, the final styling was a regal snow-white quilted and feathered ensemble. Each look was straight out of a storybook, but the final gown left several mouths agape in sheer astonishment.

At the end of the show, everyone involved in its production got to have their moment in the spotlight. Each individual who collaborated on the showcase, from modeling coaches to graphic designers, as well as ELITE leadership walked the stage in recognition of their hard work.

Not only was this showcase the debut of ELITE’s Class X, but it was also a family affair– as notable alumni from the past decade were in attendance. Even the organization’s founders: Montrose Waite and Justin Leonard made a special appearance. At the mention of their names, members of ELITE erupted into their iconic tongue-trilling chant. These creatives show immense pride in their organization, and this pride continues long after they graduate. This collective of talented people are united not only in name but in their shared love and passion for the craft.
