Bison took a blast to the past last week at the Y2K-themed Midnight Brunch in the Bethune Annex Cafeteria, an infamous tradition at Howard University.

Campus organizations such as The Ladies of the Quad Social Club, The Gentlemen of Drew Social Club, the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) Student Council, The Howard University ELITE Models, Jewels Incorporated, The Men of George Washington Carver, Incorporated, and The Society of Collegiate Black Men partnered to put on the event.

The brunch took place on Thursday, Nov. 9, as the Bethune Annex Cafeteria was filled with denim, grills, and cheap thrills with lines extending out the door.

The tradition has gone on for years and primarily serves as a chance for students to relax and celebrate the end of the semester before final exams take priority. Sophomore Noni Garret enjoyed it.

“My favorite part of this celebration was seeing everybody get excited and turn up. It allowed me to take a moment and have some fun before the hectic week of finals,” said Garrett.

ELITE Models also conducted a fashion show to put the Y2K theme on display. The models strutted in their Juicy Couture sweats and represented Howard’s style and creativity to a T. ELITE model and senior, Ginger Mattison, shared how moments like these have been crucial to her overall college experience.

“Midnight brunch has positively affected my Howard experience. It’s something I'd look back on fondly due to the fact that you wouldn’t find this anywhere else,” Mattison added. “I think entering my senior year, I've grown more appreciative to be in spaces that are so influenced by my culture and heritage knowing I'll be entering a space without it in six months. It's an event that makes you realize why you chose Howard and makes you grateful for the past 4 years spent here.”

At events like Midnight Brunch, Howard students feel pride. In what other academic setting can you have waffles while ‘swag surfin’ and watching a fashion show at 9 p.m. on a Thursday? Howard is clearly a special place.
