Howard University's Men’s Basketball team is shattering barriers within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). With a thrilling showdown against Delaware State at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia, on March 4, they secured a win of 70 to 67, earning their second consecutive Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) championship win.
Historically, HBCU teams have been overlooked in Division One collegiate sports. However, in 2023, Howard made a resounding statement by winning the (MEAC) championship for the first time in over three decades, earning their ticket to March Madness. Building on this triumph, they achieved a remarkable back-to-back victory this season.
Throughout the game the Bison showcased their defensive prowess, especially in the second half, ultimately sealing their victory.
Jordan Hairston, a graduate guard, led the charge and delivered an impressive performance with 18 points. Bryce Harris and Seth Towns also made significant contributions, each adding 16 points to the scoreboard. Additionally, Marcus Dockery showcased his talents with 15 points, further solidifying Howard's dominance on the court.
Harris, a junior guard, shared his insight on this win and the season's ups and downs, expressing an overwhelming sense of pride in contributing to the making of history.
“Being part of two of the four times we made it to March Madness is an accolade that is priceless, to say the least,” he remarked.
Recognizing the effort put in before each game, Harris emphasized how their previous win instilled the confidence they needed to perform on the court. Reflecting on the season, he described the work leading up to the game as long yet immensely worth it.
The team had been dedicated to fostering a distinctive culture, encapsulated by their assistant coach's mantra of 'Our culture versus their culture.'
Throughout the season, Harris learned the value of leading with faith rather than relying solely on what is seen. He underscored the significance of faith in his basketball journey.
When asked about pivotal moments in the championship game, he immediately highlighted teammate Elijah Williams' clutch three-pointer, affectionately dubbing him 'Mr. Dagger.'
As a leader in points, rebounds, and blocks, Harris is already strategizing for the upcoming season. His focus lies on continual improvement rather than things already accomplished.
Determined to push himself and his team further, he plans to intensify his off-season training. For players like Harris, the journey holds greater importance than the destination.
As they continue to defy expectations and inspire generations to come, the Howard University Men’s Basketball team aims to prove that with hard work, belief, and unity, anything is possible. Their journey serves as a reminder that barriers are meant to be broken.
With each victory, they not only rewrite history but also pave the way for a brighter and more inclusive future in collegiate athletics.
