Ballin on A Budget
LIFESTYLE | FEB 14, 2025
Being a college student often means juggling tight budgets and making sacrifices. In the world of fashion, Howard University stands out as a beacon of style and influence. If you're a student looking to elevate your fashion game without breaking the bank, you're in luck.
Fashion stylist and Howard University student David-Edward Brown—who has styled for TV actress Marsai Martin and designed the iconic Howard University sweater—along with Kylan Mabry, Howard University ELITE Models Class 9 stylist, share their expert tips on how to refine your personal aesthetic while keeping your finances in check. The rules are simple: creativity, sustainability, and making the most out of what you already have.
The Power of Thrifting:
Thrifting is a way to find hidden gems that can enhance your style for a lower price. Unlike conventional shopping experiences, where you know exactly what you’re looking for, thrifting requires a different mindset. You can find many classics, such as vintage jackets, retro tees, vintage jewelry, and styles from many eras. It’s all about finding those hidden gems to help you tell your story.
“I remember thrifting a pleated skirt and wearing it as a pants attachment, then my friend could wear it as a top, and one could wear it as a belt,” Brown recalls. It’s important to utilize what you have, so you don’t have to spend more. Clothes can be worn in many different and innovative ways.
The Build:
Investing in your style is always a wise decision, but the key is to do so thoughtfully. Rather than splurging on multiple budget pieces that fail to perform, focus on acquiring high-quality items that serve both function and style—like a durable coat that truly keeps you warm. When it comes to fashion, sticking to timeless classics is always a reliable approach.
“Trends evolve, but the classics never go out of style, they’ll always find a way back to society” recalls Mabry.
Mabry walks us through the build of an everyday look:
Foundation: Start with classic, solid-colored tees. They’re versatile and timeless—perfect for building any outfit.
Bottoms: Keep it simple and grounded with classic jeans, well-fitted cargo, or casual sweats.
Outerwear: The jacket is where you can express your personality. This winter, opt for a cozy puffer, a sleek trench coat, or a stylish faux fur jacket to top off your look.
Footwear: Choose shoes that reflect your personal style—comfort and confidence are key.
Jewelry: A carefully selected piece of jewelry can elevate any outfit. Let your discernment guide you in choosing the right accessories to complement your overall look.
Using Your Fashion Resources:
For students looking to save without sacrificing style, many stores offer exclusive discounts for college students, such as Zara, ASOS, H&M, and more— go to local. thrift shops like Unique and Prime Thrift for finding hidden gems. Also, with apps like Depop and Grailed, you can easily find secondhand pieces to add to your wardrobe while selling items to fund new fashion finds.
Using your Howard University community, stylists, and students, Brown and Mabry offer a range of student services, including closet consultations, event styling, and custom graphics. Check out their social media for more tips on how to refine your look and truly ball on a budget.
