Tarik Brooks, current president of Combs Global, held a Mogul Master Class on Feb. 26. Put on by Warner Music and the Blavatnik Center for Music Business, the event exposed students to the ins and outs of the music industry.

The master class began with a discussion moderated by Blavatnick Center Director, Jasmine Young. Brooks outlined his trajectory in the music business, beginning with his experience at Howard.

“Howard instilled the belief in me that I could do anything,” said the 1997 alum. “We can all get books and read about finance or accounting, but the deep confidence we all share comes from being at this special place.”

Brooks makes impact a number one priority in his work at Combs Global which is responsible for Deleon Tequila, REVOLT TV, Sean John, and Love Records and is also owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs, an honorary Howard alum.

“We should be looking for opportunities to build big global change,” said Brooks. “The name ‘Combs Global’ is our daily reminder to think big as we move forward.”

Brooks encourages future changemakers to embrace uncertainty.

“Very few people live out the life they have mapped in their head,” said Brooks.

The music exec finds authenticity equally important. “The more comfortable people are with their skin, the better they do in interviews,” said Brooks. “It’s easy to keep telling the truth, but it’s hard to keep trying to trick people.”

As the current Executive in Residence, Brooks is assisting graduating seniors to secure postgrad employment through personal mentorship.

Jordyn Taylor, a junior journalism major, appreciates the resources being provided to them. “The center opens the door for students to recognize the industry is much bigger than we think it is,” said Taylor.
