Howard Athletics embarks on this school year with exposure which was recently sparked by the women's and men's golf teams ESPN Documentary.
With fundraising efforts supported by professionaL basketball player, Stephen Curry, and championship runs, HU Golf has risen to the occasion within the athletics department.
Why Not Us: Howard Golf premiered at an exclusive screening on Aug. 21 in Cramton Auditorium. Students, faculty, producers, and family gathered to watch, showing their support for the team’s accomplishments. A Q&A panel was presented at the end of the screening which was moderated by Howard alum and sports reporter, Stan Verrett.
Basketball
Along with the golf teams’ historical accomplishments, Howard Men’s Basketball has acquired new talent for the 2023-2024 roster.
After adding eight fresh faces hailing from around the globe, Head Coach Kenneth Blakeney is optimistic about the newcomers.
"This class is the deepest and most diverse since I have been at Howard," said Blakeney. "It is a healthy mix of older transfers and true freshmen with tremendous upside. Most importantly, this class is full of 'Howard Men' players I believe will enhance #TheDreamFactory culture we have created here. I am excited to add these players to our roster and start coaching them in the fall," he continued.
Volleyball
Howard women’s volleyball recruited four newcomers from four different states as well.
"This class is filled with great talent. All four newcomers are terrific student-athletes and will have a tremendous impact on the Howard University community off the court,” Head Coach Shaun Kupferberg said to Howard Athletics.
With new additions to Howard women’s volleyball, the team was able to snag a win on Saturday, Aug. 26 against George Washington University after losing a match 3-1 against Georgetown University the day before.
The match ended with Bison coming out on top as sophomore outside hitter Rya McKinnon led the team with 28 kills and 18 digs. With this being the first home game, Howard’s women’s volleyball is looking to keep this momentum going throughout the season.
Soccer

Junior forward Melea Earley and senior midfielder Marli Berry led the Bison with two goals each.

Show Up and Show Out!
Kayla Diaz, a Howard graduate student and women’s volleyball setter, stresses the importance of fan engagement and excitement for Howard sports this year.
“I think student engagement is an essential part of athletics," said Diaz. “I think that it’s really important moving forward that athletics has a big support system because athletes are kind of the face of the university. It’s really appreciated when the student body comes out to support us. Every team has such a good extensive roster so I feel like we have so much talent to build off of. Howard Athletics is continuing to grow and I am just really excited to see the growth over the next season,” Diaz continued.
So get ready Bison fans—it’s time to see Bison athletes do their thing on the court and the field.
