Larger organizations such as the Howard University Student Association (HUSA) and National Pan-hellenic Council of organizations are well known by Bison, but what about the rest? From club sports teams to a chess club, there are extracurricular activities to satisfy just about every student’s interests. Here are three student organizations that you may not know about:
1. Changó!
Changó, Howard University’s Afro-Latine student association, seeks to share and celebrate Afro-Latine culture and customs. Changó may be small in numbers, but its impact on Howard’s campus is vast. In creating a space for Afro-Latine students to share their cultural practices, Changó has encouraged Howard students to celebrate and learn more about Afro-Latinidad.
“Anyone and everyone is welcome to join Changó. If you love the culture or just want to learn more about Afro-Latinidad, we are excited to have you in our home,” says Co-President Kayla M. Carson expressed.
Changó is a club that hopes to promote the diverse backgrounds of Howard Students. “This year will be amazing,” Carson added.
If you’d like to give Changó a try, check out their upcoming Bachata x Konpa Dance Night on Sept. 15 in association with HU Bison Catholic, Miss College of Arts and Sciences, and the Haitian Student Association. Changó will also be at the Multicultural Fair in early October.

2. Howard University Men’s Club Volleyball
Made possible by Howard University Men’s Club Volleyball’s executive board, men’s volleyball is now offered this year at Howard.
“It was always my true passion to start the club and as I continued to play, I began to meet more and more guys with that passion to start a club, so we went to work,” said Joshua Jordan, the president of HU Men’s Club Volleyball.
As HU Men’s Club Volleyball makes a name for itself, they have already begun to reach out to surrounding schools to organize friendly competition.
“Conversations to other universities in the DMV areas have been initiated in the hopes of participating in tournaments and scrimmages,” Jordan said.
HU Men’s Club Volleyball will also be present at the annual organization fair on Aug. 30.

3. Howard University Chess Club
Where else could you find a community of Black and brown chess players? The Howard University Chess Club welcomes students of all experience levels.
HU Chess Club’s executive board encourages students to come out and play regardless of their circumstances.
“If you ever see chess club members playing on campus, such as in the cafeterias, and you have a question about the club, always feel free to come up to us and ask about it, we love seeing new faces and are truly interested in having you in our club, regardless of how much you know about chess,” says the executive board of HU Chess Club.
