BY KYNADI HYDE, SECTION EDITOR

In no way is Kynadi Hyde (knowledgeably) related to Shelby, they just happen to have the same last name. They’ve even crossed-referenced their family tree to ensure that this is true.

Shelby Ying Hyde, an Indiana native,  did not just stumble into her current role as Fashion Editor at Harper’s Bazaar. Striving to produce exceptional work, trusting in her unique path, and leaning on her inherent style expertise earned Hyde a front-row seat at one of the most exclusives tables in the world– the fashion industry. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Shelby has established herself as a prominent figure within fashion journalism, beating the odds that have historically plagued Black professionals in the industry.

As early as her youth, Shelby was aligned with her calling to fashion. The style advisor noted that she was an avid magazine reader, hoarding dozens of magazines to stock her “magazine archive.” From Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue to Essence Magazine, Hyde’s archive was filled with printed copies that she held near to her heart, dreaming of one day being entangled in the fashion world.

“Now I’m writing for some of these publications,” shared Hyde, proud to admit that about two decades later, multiple issues from her childhood archive now feature some of her bylines.

When college came around in 2012, Shelby enrolled at Miami University of Ohio to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in journalism. During those collegiate years, Hyde became involved with The College Fashionista. This digital community connects college students across the country to other like-minded individuals, while strengthening members’ professional development skills and providing fashion career insight. Shelby became a contributing writer for the publication while also conducting interviews on her college campus, truly immersing herself in fashion journalism.

By the time Shelby graduated college in 2016, she had already dabbled in New York City as an intern with multiple fashion companies including “Brother  Vellies” and “Bradbury Lewis”. It was no surprise that Shelby saw a future for herself in New York, one of the world’s fashion capitals. Not too long after graduating, Shelby scored employment as a product writer for “NET-A-PORTER”, one of the leading luxury e-commerce retailers in the world. Through this role, Shelby explained that she learned how to “talk about a garment digitally,”  a necessary skill for any fashion journalist in this era.

After over a year at NET-A-PORTER, Shelby was ready for a change. She explored copywriting at another retailer, “Moda Operandi”, where she was able to segway into producing editorial content as well. Here, Shelby implanted her creativity into the company’s website and social media platforms- later preparing her for the position of a lifetime– “Shopping News & Celebrity Fashion Editor” at The Zoe Report. Sister brand to “Nylon” and “Bustle”, The Zoe Report allowed Shelby to put her editorial skills to the test by creating content and managing a collection of writers at one of the most respected publications in the industry. Needless to say, Shelby dominated the role. And then there was Covid.

Though laid off from her position at The Zoe Report due to Covid 19’s effect on corporate America, Hyde did not let the pandemic stand in the way of her dreams. Shelby began her freelance writing career, contributing stories to fashion’s most desirable publications, all while maintaining her own schedule.

“I felt so lost and discarded,” the editor reflected when asked about her transition to freelance.

After some time, Shelby saw the value that her new position lent her. Freelance writing allowed Hyde to, “define who I was outside of a brand,” she noted. This extreme flip in Shelby’s career helped to establish her personal brand, which she is extremely proud of to this day.

“When you’re freelancing, your ego has to step aside,” Shelby warned, after recognizing the toll that working unhitched to a publication presented.

By January 2021, Nylon called on Hyde to produce her own vintage and second-hand shopping column, freeing her to write about one of her favorite concepts. At Nylon, Shelby wrote stories surrounding this sweepingly growing aesthetic and provided exclusive shopping insight on where to acquire vintage’s finest.

Most recently, Shelby has been appointed to her editorial role at Harper’s Bazaar, a monthly women’s fashion magazine published by Hearst Corporation. As fashion editor at Bazaar, Shelby attends Fashion Week presentations, breaks stories on emerging fashion talent, and creates compelling content for the publication’s digital presence. One of Hyde’s most memorable stories at Harper’s Bazaar, as she tells it, was her review of Glenn Martens's first collection for Diesel, an Italian denim brand with an early 2000s flair.

In 2022, Hyde took to TikTok to share her expertise as a fashion insider, providing tips, styling advice, and commentary about the industry at large.

Shelby Ying Hyde is a fashionable model for the success that chasing your dreams can garner. Through professional journalism training and relentless efforts to align with the fashion world, Hyde has made her unique mark in the industry, breaking the barriers associated with being a woman and being Black.

“Be nice to everyone,” Hyde urged when asked what advice she would give to aspiring journalists.

The writer insisted that you never know who from your past will be vital to your future. Hyde assures that though New York’s fashion universe may seem so big, it is actually quite small and is fueled by sustainable relationships and lasting impressions. Evidently, Shelby continues to institute this advice within her personal life, as her warm and inviting attitude made for a candid and vitalizing interview.
